Tonight's SFD IRC meeting began with a few updates about promotional work
accomplished during the past week: 5 Hillsborough County libraries (West
Gate, Jimmie B. Keel, Temple Terrace, John F. Germany & Seminole Heights)
have been supplied with flyers, Craigslist now has our events listed, and at
least one local reporter (Suzanne Schmidt of The Loop, Temple Terrace
community news) is doing a story on our plans for SFD. Additional help with
promotion is always welcome so if you can assist in spreading the word about
our plans for SFD please do.
After that, the meeting discussion shifted to plans for the SFD exhibits at
MOSI and Mirta's. Our focus will be promoting Free Software, (not
necessarily Linux), by showcasing its advantages, availability, and ease of
use. We will do this by presenting a slide show that illustrates the many
ways Free Software liberates PC users, handing out CDs, and allowing event
attendees to get first hand experience with some powerful and polished
pieces of Free Software (Firefox, OpenOffice.org, a Linux Desktop with Xgl,
etc).
We plan on having Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu, and TheOpenCD available for event
attendees. There are 140 Suse CDs, 12 Fedora and about 250 of TheOpenCD. Not
sure about Ubuntu yet. Any donations of additional Free Software would be
appreciated.
There will be PCs at both MOSI and Mirta's to demonstrate some of the Free
Software that is being distributed. This will keep visitors interested (much
more exciting to see Firefox ad-blocking in action than just to hear someone
talk about it). At this point, we have a small number of demo machines
available so if you have any working
desktops/laptops/mice/monitors/keyboards/powerstrips that you can lend to
either exhibit please let me know.
Both exhibit locations have wireless Internet access available so we will
need a wireless bridge or a Linux box running as a wireless bridge in order
to get the demo PCs with wired NICs on the Internet. If you have access to a
wireless bridge or have the knowledge to set up a Linux box to do this
please get in touch.
The next SFD IRC meeting will be next Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. in
#slug.fl on irc.freenode.net and will be for all the volunteers who plan on
running the exhibits at MOSI and Mirta's. We will discuss what is to be
expected on SFD and try to determine how many volunteers will be at each
location. And of course, I have to mention the wiki:
