Joe,

A. The ESN from a hackers point of view is very easy to change. Example
would be I can change the ESN of any CDMA except Nokia CDMA phones (
requires a separate program that I dont have. ) As all CDMA phones except
Nokia's use Qualcomms CDMA chipset. Which means all cdma phones can be
altered with QPST (Qualcomm Phone Service Tools) *Motorollas while using
the Qualcomm chipset also have a 2nd locking chip and hence have a modified
version of QPST calle MPST.

B. ESN is not on all phone just CDMA Phones ( Verizion, Sprint, Alltel, US
Celluar, Western Wireless, Celluar One *some markets)

C. GSM phones (Tmobile, Cingular/ATT, Suncom, CelluarOne *some markets)
use IMEI number plus a sim card for authenication. On CDMA they authenicate
by the ESN, but on GSM it is the sim card that is the big security threat.
The IMEI number is useful though as if the phone is stolen the carrier will
put it in a national black list and keep it from registering on there
network with any sim card.
