I knew there was a reason I was on this list! ;-}

I didn't have alsaconf installed, nor did I know I needed it. But after
installing and running it, all is okay.

(Meantime, anticipating that no one would answer, I've been busy
rebuilding my kernel as a sort of "nuclear" option.)
