[SLUG] would this work?

I have an external USB drive. I want to install linux on this drive, then
use this drive to boot up new machines and copy the contents of the disk to
the new machines so that I don't have to go through the install process on
the new machines. Before I invest in a lot of frustration and time trying to
get this to work I thought I'd ask if its even possible. The machines I'm
using can boot from a USB cd-rom drive so I'm guessing that booting from a
USB hard drive isn't much different. But what do I know? I'm so hopped up on
cold medicine right now that I probably won't even remember sending this
email in a couple of hours :-)
