Well, PCIe is a serial bus. PCIe X16 is sixteen of those channels grouped
together. So I figured I could cut off 8 of them and it might work. I know
some of the early SLI motherboards would operate in 16-channel mode with one
card, or split the channels with two cards. That suggests that the cards
will operate in a 8 channel slot - if it would fit. So I ordered a card and
took a chance.

I would have preferred to get a 8 channel card, but I could only find 16
channel or single channel cards. 8 channel is slightly faster than AGP8x,
so it was worth a shot.
