Has anybody done the "build your own laptop" thing? What did you think of
the end result? Did the case seem of solid construction? Was it intricate
to (dis)assemble? How's the battery life?

It's for my (non-technical) mother; the parts I've chosen are:

case http://directron.com/z96jm.html $642
1GB SODIMM http://directron.com/vs1gsds667d2.html $34
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz
              http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111304
                                                     $206
DVD-CDRW http://directron.com/crx880a.html $39
120 GB HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152040
                                                      $70
wifi card from my friend, who's upgrading; b/g $20
--------------------------------------------------------
                                                   $1,013 counting S&H

The motherboard uses SATA, otherwise I'd probably use her previous PATA
drive. And it has only 1 SODIMM slot, otherwise I'd use her previous RAM.

Comments? I priced out similar systems at HP ($1,269) and Dell ($1,008).
