Sorry but technically you have no choice but to use a router. It will either
be in the form of for example your Linux computer giving access to your
windows computer (the easiest way), or by having a dedicated device.

The function of a router is to connect different networks. The moment you want
to connect your second computer you will have a network. The reason for that
is that two computers cannot share an internet address. So whatever the
device is that faces the internet it will have to route traffic to the other
computer.

There are no reasons why there would be any port forwarding issues that would
block XP connections, other than not knowing what you are doing of course.
Plus, if you turn off the Linux computer you network would not reach the
internet.

The easiest solution is simply to buy a small router and connect the two
computer to it.

Of course you did not tell us what you actually want to accomplish or what
your problem is. Though it's easy to imagine that you might want to host some
service and require direct access to a computer on your network. For that
there's really only one way to do it which is port forwarding.
