If you don't have a backup of previous configuration files, find a live distro that recognizes your hardware. Then compare the live (RAM) configuration files with the /etc files on your hard drive.

Also, even though they have limitations, once you know live CD "whatever" version "whatever" worked in the past, you can later use it to verify your hardware.
