[SLUG] 64-bit Ubuntu installation

So, I've got a new laptop, which I got with the idea of putting Linux on.
But, the AMD64 Ubuntu install CD won't run gdm. I think it's something with
X's driver not supporting the ATI hardware. It tries a couple times to run
X, then stops trying and gives me the "couldn't run gdm" error, with the
last bit of Xorg.0.log showing

(EE) VESA (0): No matching modes
<unload some modules>
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuable configuration

Fatal error:
no screens found

I've tried both the normal and "low graphics" variants. Is there a way to
install Ubuntu in text mode? The "Alternate" CD does so, but for 32-bit.
Is there a way to install that way, then upgrade? Can I then scrap all or
most of the 32-bit libs?

If I can't do that, any other halfway decent 64-bit distros I can try?

Your pretended fear lest error might step in is like the man who
would keep all wine out of the country lest men should be drunk.
