[SLUG] Reading blocks from SD card

Is there a way to read the blocks from an SD card directly, i.e. no file
system? I'm working on a logger with a micro writing to a SD card. The
simplest way to read it on the PC would be to read the blocks directly (the
card plugs into a usb hub that also has some sockets for the various flash
cards). So far, the only things that I've run across on the web that comes
close are some articles dealing with writing drivers.

VFAT works, but it is a bit cumbersome. So far I haven't been successful in
being able to format the card with Linux. Wn2K and a camera sets will format
it. The camera preloads some directories, and WN2K is rather generous in
hidden sectors, etc. It looks like mkfs.vfat on LInux (Suse 10.2) has
options to tailor the formatting, but as yet, I haven't been successful.
