I've setup wireless for a madwifi card, a broadcom card using
NDISWRAPPER and intel wireless.

The only one that acted strange was the broadcom card where I had to
declare the network key as shared and it worked. The rest work with 0
effort beyond those basic commands.

I would say your having a deeper rooted system/driver/hardware issue.
It should take the commands.. your root right?
