Sure. That's what they're for, after all. Maybe the packages it wants to
remove are offered by a repository I don't have now? Is there a way of
finding what repository offers them on a working Ubuntu system (say, my
laptop) so I can then add them to sources.list here?

Nope, not here. Another machine went from Ubuntu to Kubuntu, but that still
shouldn't be a big change.
