Just to close this out, I found the following which details the steps needed
to move to a different filesystem (at least with Suse 10.x)--

http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=45832

I tried it. It worked. One of the first messages 'mkinitrd' popped up
was "Adding ext3 filesystem driver"; which was needed to solve the "unknown
filesystem type ext3" boot problem.

Thanks for all the posts/thoughts on this issue.
