I just got Ubuntu working on a Dell Vostro 1000. Everything went great,
including resizing the existing Vista partition to dual-boot. The
screen was an unreadable mess, until I did a "Safe Graphics" boot and
used that to fetch the proprietary ATI driver. Now it looks great, with
3D acceleration and a ton of Compiz eye-candy (it's not my laptop).
The only sticking point was the Wireless (Broadcom BCM4310 (IIRC)). I
tried the b43, b43legacy, bcm43xx and ndiswrapper drivers, and nothing
worked for many attempts. Finally, someone on an Ubuntu support forum
suggested using a Broadcom driver from the Dell website (with a link),
with ndiswrapper. That worked flawlessly, and my friend is getting his
machine back tonight. He wasn't dying for Linux, but he absolutely
hated Vista. There's no reason for an Athlon64 X-2 with 1GB of RAM to
feel like a 386.
