Then my experiences probably won't be of any help. I think you would
consider mine "old" (5.xx, though I've done lots of upgrades). VMware
Player (XP guest) has devices -> Prolific USB Device which I think goes to
it. I'm loathe to yank the modem's cord out to check as the homebrew daemon
is likely to fail or worse get into a weird state.

Lessee, there's vmware.for-linux.* and http://communities.vmware.com/ if you
find no joy here.

Do you have the option of telling VMware that COM1: is /dev/ttyUSB0 or will
it throw a hissy fit if that device isn't there when VMware starts?
