It's a matter of mismatched impedance and signal strength. The signal out of
the turntable is very very low. A couple of mV actually. Whereas LINE in is
something like 500mV. This is why you want to use a pre amplifier to boost it
up to LINE level.

Without it the mismatch will give you a lot of white noise (like the 'sh'
sound). Not how I would want to record anything for pleasure use.
