[SLUG] trn? leafnode? xinetd?

I just solved (I think) an IDE-bus problem (jumper on the slave drive came
off, so there were intermittently two masters on that bus), so it's entirely
possible some files got damaged.

trn won't start. I look in the logs, and xinetd is doing something weird:

| Oct 22 03:20:32 pc xinetd[17951]: Started working: 1 available service
'--

There's only one xinetd running (same PID). trn says

,--
| eben@pc:/etc$ trn
| Connecting to news.home...connection to 192.168.1.50: Connection refused
| giving up...
| failed.
| Couldn't open any newsrc groups. Is your access file ok?
'--

Just to confirm that it's not just trn:

,--
| eben@pc:/etc$ telnet news nntp
| Trying 192.168.1.50...
| telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
'--

("news" is this machine, on eth0 not lo0)

I went to Synaptic and reinstalled xinetd and leafnode, and did

,--
| eben@pc:/etc$ sudo /etc/init.d/xinetd stop
| * Stopping internet superserver xinetd
| [ OK ]
| eben@pc:/etc$ sudo /etc/init.d/xinetd start
| * Starting internet superserver xinetd
| [ OK ]
'--

Same behavior. What could those lines signify? The "one service" xinetd
manages is apparently leafnode, even though it doesn't act that way:

,--
| eben@pc:/etc$ sudo netstat -A inet -ap | grep xinet
| tcp 0 0 *:nntp *:* LISTEN 17951/xinetd
'--
