It read fine when I booted under the stock Ubuntu kernel, so I compared the
CD-related modules loaded then vs the ones I had, and added ATA_GENERIC and
it worked. So either that was the reason (I don't know why it would only
affect _some_), or the reboot did it, or it's a coincidence.
