I've had trouble with it before as well. My solution was to disable
EDID data completely, and manually specify "modelines" in my X config.
Basically I had to tell X to stop playing with it and take me
literally.

My problem was that my monitor reported it only supported 1024x768,
though it really did (but was marked as 'not recommended') 1280x1024.

I have since gotten a new monitor (a 1680x1050 LCD) and the problem
just went away.
