Sorry, my mistake. I read that you did not know that you can login as root (in
terminal) so I gave the note about the root pw. It was not intended as a
solution to save your setting.

What seems clear about that is that when X is querying the monitor it reports
back 1024 which then becomes the resolution.

(I would think that running at a resolution not recommended could be lowering
the life of the monitor. But I've never seen that so I really don't know.)

Going back to the days of manually entering the frequency range available to X
might be the way to go.
