I got my sister a $40 "Muvo" brand player that runs on a single AAA and has
a separable USB drive (FAT32, of course) that speaks usb-storage and onto
which you can put anything. But, everything except a few formats gets
ignored. It plays MP3, the AAC-encoded audio track of an AVI(?), maybe an
Ogg (haven't tried), and so on. I got this one at Wally World. MP3 players
using standard batteries are hard to find.
