[SLUG] Firefox will only download mp4 files

I want it to open them with vlc, I have gone into every part of the browser to
try to get it to open the mp4 rather that download it. There is not even a
option to try to open it.

Any idea where to poke? I have looked at:
edit/preferences/applications
It show mpeg4 video >>> use quicktime video
I can not even add a entry for mp4 files there

If I go into tools/manage content plug-ins
I find that mpeg-4 video (video mp4) is a quick time plugin
If I try to alter it I am given 4 selections as operable plug-ins. those being:
Gecko media player
Totem Media player
Mplayer

If I look at the list of media, VLC owns almost all of them but a hand ful
that are listed as quick time.

How do I work around this as I want to set this machine up to go into my
video collection, select a video have have it fire up VLC, not in this case
tell me it can only download it. This is starting to act like that OS and
other associations that I shall leave nameless.

I am using a browser so I can access the videos from any machine on my
network, all I have to do is aim the browser at the file location. I
have lighttpd
setup on the machine that functions as a video server, and in my /srv/www
directory I have a symlink to the location of the videos. So when I go to
http://serverbox
I see as one of the entries
video,
I click on video, and I get 2 subdirectories, Movies and TV,
if I go into movies I get several categories, if I go into TV I get
the show names,
click on the show name and it takes me to the files under that directory. Click
on a mp4 file and I get ONE OPTION, down load the file. no option to open it
in any viewer.

I have even looked in about:config to see if I could find something there.
