NetworkManager has always been unstable in all cases I've ever encountered.
If you wish to use it, he's right, you need a tray to hold it. Trayer is
one option, but I prefer stalonetray. OR you could use something like
fbpanel or lxpanel which also have trays.
I highly recommend wicd over networkmanager though. While it wicd has a
tray app too, it also has a regular GUI and a console ncurses-based
interface. I've never had an issue with it. :)
