I'm trying to record sound on my laptop through a microphone, and either I'm
thinking of it wrong or something's broken. If it can record while playing
from e.g. Audacity (and not record what's being played), great. This is an
HP-Compaq nc6400 with ALSA something (how do I get the version?). I have
speakers plugged into the headphone port, so the chance of feedback is
somewhat reduced. Help?

* I was grasping at straws and changed these in an attempt to make a
difference (didn't work).
