Not surprising. They're bigger (-> thicker wiring in the coils), further
from your ear, and you have to play them louder to counteract road noise.
You might consider a headphone amp, suck as http://amazon.com/dp/B0007NIOK8 .
Makes things a bit louder, but mainly saves the battery in the source.
