This is going the *other* way-- connecting from Mac to Windows and
Linux.

MAILING LIST POLICIES
=====================
Revised 2006-02-01 R3.0
-----------------------------------------------------
CONTENT WE ACCEPT (IN ORDER OF DECREASING BANDWIDTH):
-----------------------------------------------------
1) Technical (Linux or computer-related) questions and answers.
This is the primary reason for this list-- to provide mutual assistance to
SLUG members with technical questions.
2) Announcements of upcoming SLUG events and summaries of recent events.
Self-explanatory, though the SLUG Announce list is really the preferred
forum for announcements.
3) Official communications from SLUG officers to members of SLUG.
Self-explanatory.
4) Linux advocacy.
Self-explanatory, but remember that bandwidth on the list should primarily
be for #1 above.
5) Linux or computer related humor or news.
Humor is acceptable, so long as it is tasteful and does not chew up too
much bandwidth. Racial, religious, male- or female-chauvinist humor is not
acceptable.
6) Commercial offerings.
Allowed on a very restricted basis, as follows:
a) You may advertise your goods and services in your tagline or signature.
b) You may advertise stuff you're _giving_ away.
c) You may discuss or recommend commercial offerings by someone other than
you, your company, or some company you're connected to in some way.
Otherwise, see #6 below.
--------------------------------------------
CONTENT WE *DON'T* ACCEPT AND/OR DISCOURAGE:
--------------------------------------------
1) Flames.
Just don't. Take it off the list. Don't say something to someone in email
that you wouldn't say to their face, and don't use this list to insult
them. See the SLUG Politics list.
2) Slurs.
These may or not be part of flames. Slurs of racial, religious, or sexual
nature are unacceptable, even if you aren't flaming someone on the list.
Likewise, while we generally are not fond of certain software companies,
it really serves no purpose to refer to them by epithets. If you believe
that they deserve your contempt, express your opinion and use the actual
name of the company. See the SLUG Politics list.
3) Pornography or advertisements for it.
It's a family list, okay?
4) Politics/Religion
While we don't want to restrain anyone's right to free speech, this isn't
really the correct forum for political or religious discussion. See the
SLUG Politics list.
5) HTML email.
It is established internet policy that HTML email is unacceptable. This is
doubly true here, where our list is run by Majordomo, which "bounces" all
HTML email off the list.
6) Commercial Offerings.
If you want to advertise your wares to SLUG members, you'll need to do
it on the SLUG For Sale page, at http://www.suncoastlug.org/forsale.php.
That webpage was created for the express purpose of allowing you to offer
your goods and services to other SLUG members.
7) Job Offerings.
If you want to advertise job offerings to SLUG members, you'll need to do
it on the SLUG Jobs page, at http://www.suncoastlug.org/jobs.php. That
webpage was created for the express purpose of allowing you to promote
jobs available and targetted at SLUG members.
--------------
ADMINISTRIVIA:
--------------
Traditionally, internet list servers and admins are sensitive about useless
waste of bandwidth. You can do your part by "trimming" text in replies
that isn't pertinent to the point you wish to make. This includes
extraneous sig lines not pertinent to your communication.
This list is not "moderated". Email sent to the list is not filtered by a
person before it appears on the list. It simply goes directly to the list,
which the list admin monitors. Keep this in mind when you post something--
there's no one to stop you from saying something stupid to hundreds of
people.
However, since membership on this list is a privilege, it can be revoked
by the list administrator. The list admin may decide that your posts don't
follow these guidelines, and he or she is allowed a certain flexibility in
this. If he decides action must be taken, he may do any of the following
(in order of severity):
1) Notify you by private email of the infraction.
2) If this doesn't work, email the list regarding your conduct as a public
warning to you and others of like mind.
3) Un_subscribe you from the list.
4) Publicly announce your un_subscribing from the list.
If you believe you have been treated unfairly by the list admin, you may
appeal to the SLUG president. He will get both sides of the story and make
a decision on the matter, which is final.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This list is provided as an unmoderated internet service by Networked
Knowledge Systems (NKS). Views and opinions expressed in messages
posted are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the
official policy or position of NKS or any of its employees.

Paul,
Is Samba on Mac OS not working for you? This is how I've done it in the
past.

This is going the *other* way-- connecting from Mac to Windows and
Linux.

A Friend of mine suggested I host a LAN party.
I have an 8-port gigabit mini-switch wired into a couple rooms and can
probably borrow another for a party.
My system is a 4 year old server-class Dell with 1 GB RAM, Detected
2392.235 MHz hyper-threaded P4/Xenon processor, and pathetic graphics.
Let me mention the pathetic graphics capabilities again.
I've also got an even older systen I could use, an 800 MHz with 256 MB Ram,
win98/linux/knoppix and an ATI RAGE 128 card.
Any suggestions what games I could host/play? My friends would
probabably bring Windows systems, so the games would have to be able to
run on everything and have available downloads.
Personally, I'd be happy with a group Nethack or Hunt The Wumpus, but
I'm not sure about everyone else.

I find that Scorched3D is always fun, and you might be able to handle

Definitely check out Nexuiz. It might run in low graphics mode. The game is
awesome.

Let me mention the pathetic graphics capabilities again.
I've also got an even older systen I could use, an 800 MHz with 256 MB Ram,

Any suggestions what games I could host/play? My friends would

run on everything and have available downloads.
Personally, I'd be happy with a group Nethack or Hunt The Wumpus, but
I'm not sure about everyone else.

Definitely check out Nexuiz. It might run in low graphics mode. The game=
is awesome.

What about counterstrike and Warcraft or Starcraft? We used to play those at LAN parties all the time. Great fun. And wine supports then pretty nicely now so I would immagine they would work fine. Another great one if you like fantasy games is neverwinter nights since there is a Linux client you would be set. Also savage is a pretty good game with a native Linux client.
I'm sure there are many more. I think you need to ask your friends what they want to play and see if they run on Linux or if there is a similar FOSS game.

The most fun I've ever had at a lan party was with an old game called

Haven't been to a LAN party in years, but the best game at the ones I
used to host was undoubtedly Armagetron. I'm nostalgic just thinking
about it.

Hi Ken,
I know, you have a good corporate IT budget. You can afford a PCI-e card
*and* a Dremel. Probably even have a legal copy of The Great $atan.

I have a second-generation iPod Touch (internal speaker, contoured back).
This is unlike what I've read about earlier iPods in that none of the
third-party management tools works. So I'm stuck with iTunes. Except that
I installed an app called "Finder" (think MacOS) and a third-party media
player. I can ssh and ftp into it so I can do file management that way, as
long as I don't expect the iPod's default apps to take notice of what I've
done.
Last week I noticed space was getting low (it's a 16GB unit), so I deleted a
big file through Finder. I forget how big exactly, but somewhere in the
dozens of megabytes. Free space didn't change. I've now got 56 KB left[1].
Is there a Trash I have to empty? I can't see one in Finder.
Just to make sure it didn't reclaim the free space then fill it up again
without me noticing, I just deleted a 700 MB file (same method) then
immediately went to Settings. 56 KB free. So if it filled it up again it
did so in a few seconds.
[1] The (internal) Flash card is partitioned, so the OS "drive" has 535 MB
free. It's only the one for user files that's about full.

I've got two sites a customer set up, one of which is where their web
content actually is, and one merely "points" to the other. I'd like to
find out which site is the "real" one. There's a command to query the
DNS records, which will tell which is which. But I can't remember the
command. Anyone know?

The 'host' command should tell you if its a CNAME.
~$ host example.com.
example.com is an alias for example.net.
example.net has address xx.xx.xx.xx

I find myself in posession of a WebTV, and am considering giving it to my
grandmother (think the worst computer-illiterate person you know times 10,
plus self-esteem problems to boot) on the grounds that, since its
capabilities are really limited, she can't screw it up too badly.
The device works as far as I know. It uses some online service, correct?
Does it use standard SMTP/POP protocols? I assume it can browse the web,
and this one arrived with a parallel cable so apparently it supports local
printing. How about cookiaes, Javascript, and Flash? Are there
compatibility problems?

I just set up a centralized mailserver for our network. As configured, a
fetchmail process runs as a daemon for each user. (Fetchmail run as a
single, central daemon dumps email into /var/mail/fetchmail, instead of
the individual spool files.) If I have to restart that system for some
reason, I'd like a way to restart the individual fetchmail daemons (all
two of them). But they run under the UID of the individual users who
issue the fetchmail command. Rather than having to ssh into that server
as each user and issue a fetchmail command, I'd like a way (preferably a
script) which will lauch the two fetchmail instances as the individual
users without my intervention. I know, tall order.
Any ideas?

could use sudo but before edit /etc/sudoers and give permission to the group
of those having fetchmail run then just run fetchmail. Around those lines i
bet.

If you are running fetchamil in daemon mode then all you need is
/etc/fetchmailrc. Add "poll" for each user.
If a users wants to set up an individual one then they can create their
own file in ~/

Here's the problem: unless you use "multidrop mode", which is hairy and
which I don't fully understand, if you just run a central fetchmail
daemon, the mail dumps into /var/mail/fetchmail. What I need instead is
for mail for me to end up in /var/mail/paulf and mail for Nancy to end
up in /var/mail/nancyf. Hence the need for two separate user-launched
fetchmail daemons.

Hello Sluggers,
Wondering is anyone else has seen this stange behavior.
While I am in the middle of typing a document the fonts will suddenly go from
lower case to capital, and NO I don't accidentlt hit the "Caps" key, and
there is no indicator light on the keyboard. Then I must hit the "Caps" key,
get the indicator light and the fonts are displayed as lower case. The shift
key will work but it is now opposite.
>From that point on every app, kwrite, Firefox, a teminal etc. will follow this
strange behavior. Cannot get out of it until I kill the session. On starting
a new session all is well again....until... it does it again.
Anybody have any wild ideas about this ???

Are you using xmodmap at all? It's possible some key or key
combination got assigned to capslock's function?

'xmodmap -pm | grep Caps_Lock' should tell you what's mapped to Caps_Lock.
1st column is the key name. "lock" is the key normally bound to it. You
can also try pressing shift-q, ctrl-q, alt-q, winkey-q, rightmousekey-q,
shift-w, etc through each printing key to see when it happens. I hope that
finds it, because there are 10 2-modifier and 10 3-modifier combinations for
each key, I would guess something with the winkey as it's something you
might not hit on purpose.

I have that problem. For me, it's my shift key; all of the sudden the
system thinks I'm holding the shift key down. To fix it, I just hit the
shift key.

You can reverse-engineer a lot of it by adding a user and filling in all the
slots, e.g. "office number". As for official documentation, no idea. Try
the source to /bin/login.

Thus Dylan William Hardison hast written on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 12:36:13PM -0400, and, according to prophecy, it shall come to pass that:

man shadow:
The password field must be filled. The encrypted password consists
of 13 to 24 characters from the 64 character alphabet a thru z,
A thru Z, 0 thru 9, \. and /. Optionally it can start with a
"$" character. This means the encrypted password was generated
using another (not DES) algorithm. For example if it starts with
"$1$" it means the MD5-based algorithm was used.
Refer to crypt(3) for details on how this string is interpreted.
man 3 crypt:
No manual entry for crypt in section 3
Google results:
http://linux.die.net/man/3/crypt

Anyone know where the password field of /etc/shadow is documented? I'm
using libnss-extrausers and I need to be able to generate correct
hashes for my supplemental shadow file.

I wasn't aware that crypt(3) was as smart as it is. I'll be using
crypt($pw, '$5$' . rand())
and having pam_unix default to sha256 as well. :-D

Fellow sluggers, I need your help.
I want to build a regex that would match an email in the form "NAME "
Now, let me try to explain how I want the match to work. Maybe you can
help me build a working regex, I couldn't figure it out
Given ABCDE
A = any alpha string or two alpha strings seperated by a space ("John
Doe" or "John" but not "John A Doe" or "J4ne Doe")
B = Single space char
C = less-than (<) char
D = any length alpha-only string, followed by either 2 digits or 4
digits (ie, "john02 or "john2002" but not "power2you")
E = "@gmail.com>"
An example address: "Stupid Spammer "

Note that lots of mail comes from gmail (my friend's, for example) unrelated
to GG.
That said, how about
'^[A-Za-z]*( [A-Za-z]*){,1}<[A-Za-z]([0-9][0-9]){,1}([0-9][0-9]){,1}@gmail\.com>$'
It may need some extra backslashes. I'm not sure which characters are
special and which aren't.

Thanks!
Yea, I know... but it's that particular
combination. Anyways, I'm just going to downscore it enough to make it
easy to skip, but without hiding (so I'll still see followups etc)

I have a VM in vmplayer. When it was last booted, it got an address via
DHCP. Eventually I suspended the OS and exited the VM, and the router
released the address. But next time the VM was resumed it continued using
the same address. By this time it had already been given out again by the
router. This has happened before. How do I force Linux to retry DHCP?

Why use DHCP? I'd suggest a fixed address and reserve it in DHCP so you
don't get a conflict.

It was going to be DHCP-assigned fixed addresses, but I made a typo entering
somewhere in the (IP, MAC) pair, and the crappy router software won't let
you fix or delete a mapping until it is active, which it'll never be because
there's a typo on it. $%*^. But I'd rather have a centralized location
from which I can employ a new NIC -> IP mapping than have to run around to
all the computers. Never mind that there are several transient computers
which may not get the word.
