What are you smoking man?! Compaq actually has AMAZINGLY GOOD support
for Linux. Check this out:

http://www.compaq.com/products/software/linux/

So, ok, they actually have really really good support for their server
class machines, not so good for desktops, but who buys a Compaq desktop
to run Linux anyway? ;)

Seriously, we've installed Linux on everything from ancient Proliant
1500 towers to brand new little 1u DL360's to massive 8-way Xeon
Proliant 6000 series machines with no problems at all. Compaq's got
great support for their SMARTRAID controllers and ThunderLAN based NICs,
and the techs at Compaq who do Linux support are amazingly knowledgable
and responsive about supporting you if you do have issues.

I have the feeling the reason the support is so good is that the people
inside of Compaq pushing Linux are Linux fanatics themselves, giving
110% to make sure that the rest of Compaq realizes that Linux is a
viable force in the server OS marketplace so they can eventually stop
working quite so hard all the time and let Compaq do all the pushing
once they realize how good Linux could be for Compaq if they pushed it
as hard as they do Windows or Tru64 UNIX.

Mike,
Compaq doesn't explicitly list any of the Presario line as being
compatible with Linux but if you can list the hardware that's in the box
we can probably tell you how easy it will be to get it working. (Things
like video chipset, hard drive controller, etc.) Unless it's got some
REALLY WEIRD video or IDE chipset in there, it shouldn't be a problem at
all.
