As far as I know, Compaq doesn't play very nice with GNU/Linux. However,
I recommend that you get a partitioning tool and try out a small
partition of GNU/Linux to see if you're going to encounter any
compatibility problems (if you go with a off-the-shelf box, then you're
in luck if you go with Mandrake or SuSE - they both have built in
partitioning tools). If you look to run fine from there, I'd say back up
your precious info and blast that HD. If things are NOT fine, then...
well, that's what we're here for ;). Now, note that you're probably
going to have better luck with SuSE, seeing as they seem to be forging a
business alliance. (If anyone remembers what I'm referring to, can you
please post some links).
