I am having a bit of difficulty getting SAMBA set up on my network!! I have
been reading everything that can on the subject and following the
instructions that are given in the manuals...but to no avail!! So I thought
that I would toss it out to the user group and see if you can provide some
insight.

I have set up a network at my home that consists of a Dell desktop with Red
Hat 7.0 which I am trying to network with my laptop which is a Sager NP2260V
running WIN2000Pro.
I am using a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router model BEFSR41, (the one with
the 4 node HUB built into the unit...I would like to eventually hook the
network up to the internet when I know a bit more about security!)
I have the SAMBA RPM installed on the Red Hat machine and have been using
SWAT to do my configuration file. So far I have not been able to get the
WIN2000Pro to see the Linux machine!! I have tried using Network Places as
well as Mapping the IP address as a drive...nothing seems to work!!

I have been able to ping both machines with NO problems!!

The router IP is 192.168.1.1
The Win2000Pro laptop is 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
And the Red Hat machine is 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I don't have the version of SAMBA in front of me since the computer is at
home, (I believe that it is 2.0.7)...but I can get that info if it will be
helpful...

As I understand it the DNS server should be the router IP address...(??)

I have a login set up on the Linux machine with the Win2000Pro login info...
What about the SAMBA Password file...I have set that up with SWAT. But I
cannot seem to get a list of my users on the SWAT page...perhaps I am doing
something wrong with regards to the password...
I have tried encrypted passwords...as well as plain text passwords...

I'm just missing something!!!!!

I am using SAMS Teach Yourself SAMBA in 24 Hours as well as Red Hat Linux
Bible as references...

It all seems so easy when I read it...but it doesn't seem to work!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for your help...
