Have you tried a different video card? This sounds like my old HP machine and
its video problems to me.

X has been updated along with the Kernel and Gnome and KDE and libraries and
Qt plus other changes. Considering all the changes one should expect the
current releases to be rather buggie.
The only reason I can thank of for changing now from Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0 or
RH 7.0 to 7.1 is that you have some problem that you are trying to solve that
requires one of the updated components - like the latest version of X.
