I've met a few guys from Pixar. Steve is Pres or CEO of some flavor,
but he came in long after Lassiter, Catmull, et al started the company
and very much understands that his place is in running the business end
of things and let the real engineers do the engineering. Pixar was
really keen on Linux three or four years ago and had already ported most
of their internal software back then. (Renderman for Linux was
commercially available in '98 when I met and talked with some of the key
developers at SIGGRAPH in Orlando.) I'm actually kind of surprised they
are still using Sun machines to do all their rendering at this point;
they've either got to be leftovers from the last big batch of Sun
purchases that they're still using or Sun has made them a helluva deal
to keep buying their hardware. The techies at Pixar are incredibly
smart and creative and I'd give my left ... leg ... to work there. But
they have thousands more applicants than they ever know what to do
with...
