If changing root's password also changes his, then his uid is set to '0'
which is confusing logins.

How is he adding his user to the system after installation? 'useradd'
or some other tool, or is he adding it by hand-editing /etc/passwd?

If he changes root's password, which also changes his userid's password,
can he then login as root with that new password?

It sounds like the process of adding his userid to the system after
installation is not going as-planned and is screwing things up.
