The real reason Linux is going to have a tough time on the desktop is
because of how hard it is to install a program. For instance, I just
installed RH 7.1 on my laptop, and wanted to get my DVD player to work, so I
went to linuxvideo.org and grabbed livid. Oops, there are newer versions of
libac3, oms, and omi -- well, have to get those too. Compile libac3;
everything is fine. Compile oms; oops, need a newer version of
libSDL...gotta go find that. Ok, got libSDL compiled and installed. Compile
omi; everything is fine. Run 'omi_gtk'; oops, forgot to compile
libcss....etc,etc.

Most desktop applications are on the cutting edge of what is possible in
Linux right now...which is not a good place to be if you expect your mom to
use it.
