What model is it? What hardware list?
Does he have ` /dev/modem ' set to the serial
port it is connected to?
When he sends the modem an ATZ (or an atz)
what does he get back? I use mincom, which
must be set to the same Comm port as the ppp
script files but separately, to test modems.
  (just like telex for DOS)
(I frequently check in to my dialup UNIX shell
account with my old 28.8 kB/s internal modem
on Comm 3 while I am downloading my tunes & pix
with my dialup internet account with my 56 kB/s
US Robotics modem on Comm 1)
