Off the top of my head:

GNU/BSD/Perl/MIT/Cygnus/Cyclic/Netscape/Apache/GNOME/KDE/`cat
/usr/src/linux/CREDITS`/Linux

GNU = of course we know these guys
BSD = lots of utils are BSD-derived under Linux, as well as a lot of
kernel code, and thanks to Kirk McCusick and Bill Joy and the rest of
the BSD UNIX crew for the first explicitly Free (beer and freedom) UNIX
OS around
Perl = what would an OS be without perl on it?
MIT = thanks for giving us XWindows so we don't have an OS without a GUI
Cygnus = thanks to Cygnus for forking EGCS away from GCC and fixing lots
of bugs and making development actually happen on it again (they've
since merged EGCS with GCC again, but I don't think that should take
away from their contribution)
Cyclic = without CVS, very few of these projects would have been so
successful
Netscape = even with X, who wants an OS without a web browser
Apache = even with a web browser, it would be nice to also run a web
server, and not just any web server, but one that runs 65% of all web
sites out there
GNOME = and who wants a GUI and web browser if your desktop is
unmanageable and looks like crap
KDE = see line above and think "because choice is good"
cat /usr/src/linux/CREDITS = if we have to include everyone who's
responsible for Linux being a success in its name, we might as well do
so pedantically...
