Well said, But.... If I find the ip changes I update the dns at enic.cc. I
use a lynksys router and only yester have I found some third party apps that
can extract the WAN ip from the router. My linux box has a private IP
behind the router. I will take you up on your offer for the scripts, please
send them to me.

Using either a netgear or lynsys router, any other ideas?

Patric,

Instead of remembering my _dynamic_ IP number, I use www.dyndns.org. It
has a free dynamic DNS service. Just register, setup an account
(i.e. mycomputer.dyndns.org), and use an update client then you are
set. The key is the dynamic client. Currently, I am using a combo of a
Python and Bash script to do all the work. But, they are other clients out
there. Every hour, it checks my _dynamic_ IP number and compared to the
www.dyndns.com's DNS database. If it is different (when my IP changes), it
will update www.dyndns.org's DNS database. Then, it sends me an email
telling that the IP address has changed and been updated. If it stays the
same (no change in IP), nothing happens. There is no update or email. I
guess no news (email) is good news! Furthermore, if my IP has not changed
in 25 days, the Python script will do a force update. Www.dyndns.org wants
some activity (such as an update) within 30 days. Otherwise, they will
consider it an inactive account and drop you.

With all that, you only have to remember your account name with
www.dyndns.org. No more toying around with IP numbers.

If anyone is interested in the Python or Bash script, drop me an email.
