I would use fresh floppys. You can get 100 blank sony 1.44 disk at staples
for 23.95 which is the best deal.
Also Sony blank disk seems to be the most error free I have ever used got
some 8 years old still works
like new today. They use a better film on the disk which seems to live up to
it's promise.

Floppys usually go bad after around 5 - 6 years if it was good yes just
sitting it can go bad as they
loose the mangetic characteristics. This is not allways the case but if Win
Image gives you a error
I would have to say you can bet it is toast.

Also keep this in mind once you do a extended format to 1.68 or 1.72 meg
they can not go back.
How ever that usually is not a problem at least with me since I always try
to use as much space as
I can on a Floppy since now they are more expensive then CD's.

I even still like using 5 1/4 floppys reminds me of High School Days oh my
now I feel old.
Since that was 16 years ago! Time does fly.

Enjoy
