Not true, I consider myself a Linux "Guru" (as others have made that claim long enough that it's stuck) I use a GUI.. of course it's partly because alt-tab is faster than control-alt-1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 <G> but I like to (yes, insert many geek points here) catch my trek episodes in a small window while I work on my (insert more geek points here) latest creation: reverse proxy server.. <G>

su
vi /etc/inittab

look for something like this:
id:3:initdefault:

change it to:
id:5:initdefault:

esc:wq

it may look different on deb, I use RH (flame me offline if you must guys my UIN is 3947763 haha) :-P

If you are running default you will get an xdm login session, you may want to install kdm or gdm they are "prettier" I use gdm which comes with ximian gnome ( lynx --source http://go-gnome.com |sh to install ximian)

xdm won't give you that, gdm and kdm will.
