Back when I was writing my old "Cheap Computing" column, I saw an
pattern: big chains like CompUSA were generally the lowest-priced
retailers of packaged systems and boxed components, especially when they
were running sales. They were very hard to beat on laptops, hard drives,
inkjet printers, video cards, and so forth.

But when it came to parts -- things like cables and connectors -- the
local stores unvariably beat them to death on price.

BTW - I am *still* hoping someone will be able to send me a brief
first-person writeup about the 10th anniversary picnic. Needn't be great
writing or even grammatically correct. I'm going to edit hell out of it
anyway.
