That's because it doesn't have a built in modem. ;-) Add $15.00 to your
shopping list, and pick up a pcmcia modem off of eBay, your best bet
IMHO.

Uhhh, I haven't even attempted to configure the built in modem on this
toshiba, though I would guess the linmodem driver would work with it
with kernel 2.2.

Yes, sound works on all of my laptops. I use pcmcia modems so I haven't
bothered with the winmodem in my toshiba. I have gotten the winmodem
linux driver (lucent) working on a Compaq Armada M700, M300, and an E500
though. I believe they are still >$600 notebooks though.
