right click on network neighborhood, and select properties.
when the network menu come up, verify that client for Microsoft networks is
displayed in the network components screen. If Windows family logon is show
"DELETE IT" the Windows family logon will not allow you to share or access
network objects. You should also see a network card driver object and a
tcp/ip object assigned to the network card. if you want the Linux box to be
able access your windows shares add file and printer sharing.
AN IMPORTANT PART: if you select the identification tab, you will see the
field to name your computer, a workgroup field, and a computer description
field. THE WORKGROUP field must match the workgroup settings in the
smb.conf. If the workgroups are different, windows will NOT see the samba
box.
all boxes must be on the same workgroup, and ip subnet. In my smb.conf, I
only allow computers on the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet.

Please educate me a little bit more here.
There are 2 and only 2 computers for this network
Linux Box -> Server/router/gateway -> 192.168.1.1 -> lan_sys_opt
Win 98 Box -> Workstation -> 102/168.1.2 -> lan_user
If I understand you correctly what you are saying is that if I copy your
samba.conf file to my samba.conf file and make the above changes I should be
able to see the network from the Win98 box?
At that point how do I set up my Win 98 box? ie what settings do I use?
