I believe you. The 2.4.x and latest ALSA drivers are much better
with the Live! And I've been using NT since before it was released,
so NT does hardware it supports (which is much less than Windows 9x)
very well.

But Windows 98 SE and ME have the compatibility share while being
less than stable and accomodating at the same time.

Which is why Creative bought out Ensoniq, they struck a perfect
balance between cost and quality. Unfortunately, when they bought
Ensoniq, they closed up their openness. Fortunately, Creative
didn't change the chips much and it was easy to hack the Ensoniq
ES1370 to support the ES1371 and, later, the ES1373.
