[SLUG] 2.4.5 faster than 2.2.19 kernals

Hi all:

A few weeks ago I stated: I changed from 2.2.19 to 2.4.5 kernel
(Slack. 8.0) and boot time was 2/3ds of previous time and everything
else was faster, others saw no such change.
I have traced this improvement to 2.2.19's inability to support
DMA for my (new) VIA chipset on board IDE controller.(UDMA-100/66/33/PIO)
(2.4.5 locked up 3-4 times each day, 2.2.19 only every other day, I reverted)
It takes over 20 minutes for fsck to examine my 40 gig UDMA 100 drive,
but I am normally downloading tunes and PIX with pan the newsreader
while I am working in 10 consoles with mc, therefore file system damage
is normal, and this frequently takes me over 4 hours to recover the drive.

I have a DMA patch for 2.2.19 that I hope will get me above PIO, but
I can't find any instruction on how to apply a `patch' to my kernel.

  Where would I find such?
