If it's anything like MCafee's VirusScan for Linux (This may have changed,
last I used it was nearly two years ago I think) then it simply scans samba
shared folders.

Subject: [SLUG] virus protection for the Linux environment?
I'm thinking this is mostly an attempt to market to
companies using Linux servers, whose purchasing agents
don't know any better--although I wondered about the
"backdoor" protection, which isn't virus protection at
all. Does anybody have any opinions on the usefulness
of "ServerProtect?"
Trend Micro Ships ServerProtect for Linux
With comprehensive real-time scanning, ServerProtect
for Linux guards Linux-based file servers against
viruses, Trojans, and other malicious code
Cupertino, Calif. - November 12, 2001- Trend Micro
Inc. (Nasdaq: TMIC; TSE: 4704), a worldwide leader in
network antivirus and Internet content security
solutions, today announced the immediate availability
of ServerProtect for Linux. ServerProtect for Linux
provides comprehensive virus protection for an
organization's file servers running
Red Hat (v6.2 or 7.1) distributions of the Linux
operating system. With real-time scanning
capabilities, ServerProtect for Linux quickly and
effectively helps prevent the Linux file server from
becoming a repository for infectious files.
ServerProtect for Linux is designed to filter out
viruses and other malicious code at the server level,
before they have a chance to spread through shared
documents and infect other computing environments. It
is managed through an intuitive Web-based console,
which provides remote virus scanning, pattern updates,
event reporting, and antivirus configuration
capabilities. Administrators can easily manage
antivirus maintenance tasks such as initiating
on-demand scanning, pattern and program file updates,
printing/exporting/purging virus logs, and setting
parameters for real-time scanning.
Protecting critical business and IT resources,
ServerProtect for Linux provides organizations with a
scalable, indispensable tool for protecting the
popular Red Hat Linux distribution. With this
announcement, Trend Micro continues to provide
comprehensive virus protection for the constantly
evolving and wide range of platforms driving today's
business initiatives.
"With the release of ServerProtect for Linux, Trend
Micro has expanded its protection for the Linux
operating environment and continues its leadership
role in making antivirus protection a key part of the
enterprise infrastructure," said David Rowe, executive
vice president of marketing for Trend Micro. "As the
use and popularity of the Linux platform expands, so
too will the need for Linux-based virus protection."
The rapid proliferation and destructive potential of
viruses and other malicious code, which can spread
through shared documents, underscores the need for
server-based virus protection. Last year, Trend Micro
responded to the growing need for virus protection for
the open source world by developing InterScan
VirusWall for Linux with support for Red Hat, SuSE,
and Turbo Linux.
Linux is popular among system administrators and
Web-hosting organizations for its cost effectiveness
and flexibility as an operating system. According to
IDC, Linux now holds second place for new server
licenses shipped for 2000, with 27% of the market,
topped only by Microsoft Windows. Other operating
systems followed far behind with less than 14% of
shipments.
Key Features of ServerProtect for Linux
Trend Micro's ServerProtect for Linux provides
comprehensive virus scanning for file servers running
Red Hat Linux to detect and remove known and unknown
viruses on the fly. Key features include:
· Remote Management via Web-based Browser -
ServerProtect for Linux is configured via a
browser-based console.
This allows administrators to control the application
from any location with an Internet connection, through
a feature-rich interface. The console can be accessed
through both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape
Navigator.
·
Real-time and Scheduled Scanning - In addition
to on-demand scanning, or Scan Now, ServerProtect can
act
against viruses automatically -- without user
intervention. Real-time scanning checks files or
viruses whenever they are accessed, such as when files
are copied or used. Scheduled scanning performs a
thorough scan of the Linux file server at regular,
user-specified intervals. Scans can be scheduled after
office hours so as not to interfere with normal
operations.
· Manual or Automated Component Updates from a
Variety of Sources - Adminstrators can perform manual
or scheduled updates of virus pattern and scan engine
files ensuring the system is protected with the most
recent virus protection available from Trend Micro.
ServerProtect for Linux users can specify an
Internet-based update source.
·
Notification of Virus Outbreaks - Administrators
can receive email and/or Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) notifications about system or virus
events, like virus outbreaks, that occur on the
ServerProtect machine. This allows administrators to
always stay on top of developing virus situations, 24
hours a day, wherever they are.
Pricing and Availability
ServerProtect for Linux Version 1.0 is now available
as a download from Trend Micro's Web site and has a
suggested retail price of $600 USD for a 25-seat
license. For more information, please visit our Web
site at http://wwwantivirus.com/products/splinux/ or

Trend AV (in North
America only).
