Actually, inetd is being replaced by xinetd on many newer distros
(Mandrake 8.x) for example.
The key differences-
- inetd uses /etc/inetd.conf for configuration
- xinetd uses /etc/xinetd.conf to set global options
and files under an 'includedir' (usually /etc/xinetd.d)
