[SLUG] Gnome Problem

Well, after many months of staring at Redhat 5.x, 6.x boxes, I decided to
install 7.2 on a BX mobo 400Mhz PII PC that I had kicking around. I
selected custom install, then installed everything except for laptop. All
went well with the install, no error messages. On the first boot after
install, I tried to login as root to Gnome. I got a 'fatal error', which I
didn't write down. I then did a login as root to KDE, and it worked fine. I
activated RH, and used the update manager to download and install errata
fixes (lots of them). All worked as designed. However, I went back to
Gnome. I see the init messages on the lighthouse screen, the last one being
"starting Gnome: done". After that, all I get is a light blue screen with a
mouse pointer. No desktop. Any ideas of what I can check? Many thanks for
any assistance.

PS What a breath of fresh air from the world of Windoze :-)
