In the artice -
http://movingparts.thelinuxcommunity.org/systems.shtml
- The guy is pretty much on the ball when it comes to
the capabilities of Linux vs. BSD. In fact, I would
probably go as far as saying that he misses one even
bigger point and that is that BSD is much cleaner than
Linux in the way it handles a number of functions (for
example, not just anywone can su to root - you have to
be a part of the correct group in order to be able to
su).
The truth of the matter is that BSD is a "better"
system due to the time that it's been in development
(effectively arround 30 years, starting with Bell
Labs). Linux, on the other hand, is only about 10
years old and because of that, it has the luxury of
being able to be a little "sloppy" at times. I mean.
c'mon, you HAD to have great memory management
capabilities if you were running a system with an
amazing 1 meg of RAM (yes, I know, no one will ever
need more than 640K...). Linux, on the other hand, was
developed in the days where RAM flowed (grammar?!)
through the shops like chocolate through Germany and
you could afford an entire 4mb of RAM in your amazing
386 desktop. The rule of thumb is that inneffective
coding sells hardware (exxplain to me again why I need
a $500 video card to play a video game, and why that
game takes 1.5gigs in my hard drive...). In this case,
however, it's more like having a bigger margin of
"error," something the original Unix people didn't
have the luxury of exploiting. That being said, it
really all boils down to one question: what were the
roots?
Now, you're probably asking yourself "well, then why
is Linux so popular?" Simply put, it's a matter of
culture. Linux people tend to show off what they like
to do (and in return expect to be told how others did
what they did), whereas BSD people are more likely to
simply "get it done and get going." Linux people are
more flamboyant than BSD people (ironically enough).
I could get more into this, but I wont. The simple
case is this: Linux is beter supported than BSD.
However, BSD is better built. There's not much of a
difference (in that aspect), but the difference that
there is is enough to make a difference in what you
like to use and your reasons for the such.
I hope that made some sense. I'm full of turkey and
they side effect are taking over.
