Mostly out of familiarity. I've been a rabid fan of Gnome for a long time,
and I'm quite pleased with the spate of useful programs they offer.

I must say, I've got a mac running yellow dog as a project box, and it has
a KDE desktop that's quite nice.

So, result, I'm biased, but not violent.
