Basically think of OpenOffice and StarOffice in the same relationship as
Mozilla and Netscape. OpenOffice is the open-source codebase, where
StarOffice is the "Sun-enhanced" codebase, possibly enhanced with
proprietary and/or third-party-licensed code - stuff they can't
open-source because they don't own it. Conversely, StarOffice, if Sun
has finally decided to only offer it commercially, will help pay for the
continued development and support of OpenOffice. (It seems to be about
the best open-source business plan around - commercial, more
feature-filled version helps subsidise the development of the
open-sourced and free version.)

StarOffice will probably continue to be more feature-filled than
OpenOffice, but OpenOffice will (hopefully) give rise to various
associated projects, kind of like the way the OEOne computer uses a
heavily modified Mozilla for it's UI, and the Galeon browser just uses
the Mozilla rendering engine. Neither of which likely would have
happened without Mozilla being around first.

I'll predict that sooner or later someone will get around to building
"standalone" (i.e. not part of "OpenOffice") word processing and
spreadsheet apps based on the OpenOffice core, that don't require the
rest of the OpenOffice stuff.
