My old laptop was a Toshiba 4015 that ran Linux. It mostly worked
although the PCMCIA support was flaky and there was no hope of ever
getting the IR working. I still have it but the battery is dead as a
doornail. Strangely, I know a LOT of people with Toshiba laptops that
have dead batteries. I think it's a trend and another reason I would
avoid Toshiba laptops.
My current laptop is a Compaq Armada 7400 that runs Linux like a dream.
(Well, mostly. APM support seems to have gotten entirely borked
sometime during 2.4, so battery life on it sucks dirt now. I've
commented a couple of times on LKML and, while I received a response
that seemed to indicate there was a real problem with scheduling the
kapm_idled thread, it doesn't seem like anything's ever been done about
it. That's the kernel's problem, though, not the laptop's.)
I highly recommend Compaq and IBM hardware to run Linux. The most
success stories seem to come from those vendors.
